The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC - 2008-2009

Name of the Institution :
Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, Tiruchirappalli
Year of Report : 2008– 2009
Visit of the NAAC Peer Team: 28 - 29 March 2007.

Part – A

The Peer Team deputed by the NAAC, visited the college in March 2007 for the assessment and accreditation process. The assessment placed Kalai Kaviri college of Fine Arts at ‘A’ level. As per the NAAC proposal, the institution has established an Internal Quality Assurance cell (IQAC) as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure.

On 23 April 2008, the IQAC initiated its activities with a meeting at the college premises and the following decisions were taken:.

01. The college has been providing BFA, IBFA and MFA Degree courses in Bharathanatyam and Carnatic Music so far. During the oncoming academic year 2008-2009, the college has planned to start Kuchupudi and Mohiniyattam degree courses.

02. The management has been taking efforts to start M.Phil in dance. But there are certain drawbacks because the staff in the department of dance are yet to fulfill the requirements of the university.

03. The Principal informed that the institution has not yet been recognized for UGC under Rule 2(f) and 12 (b) because of the inability of the faculty in fulfilling the requirements of qualification. It was suggested that it would be better to apply for UGC without delay. The college shall forward the application to the University for Registrar’s approval and then to UGC. Moreover, it is necessary to insist the University to introduce SLET for dance, in order to sustain and promote the quality of the teaching-learning and research in higher education.

04. The Management has been exploring the possibility of teaching music through internet. It was widely accepted by the members of the IQAC, that if at all music is taught through internet-virtual medium, it may reduce the percentage of admission. However, the course can be offered for foreign students.

05. One member of the IQAC, suggested that, gaining autonomy is more important than becoming a Deemed University. So steps need to be taken regarding autonomy.

06. Inter-disciplinary programmes and competitions need to be conducted every year to foster the competitive spirit among the students on a regular basis. Moreover, a special programme called, ‘Special Tamil’ has been introduced for students who do not have Tamil as their mother tongue.

07. The IQAC has decided to have separate libraries for the department of dance and music.

08. College on-line magazines were recommended to be introduced.

09. Various quality parameters of higher education were worked out regarding the functioning of the Research Centre.

10. To promote the use of technology in the academic activities, it will be insisted upon to have a LCD projector for teaching-Learning. Secondly, the institution has planned to start a certificate course in computer to foster global competencies among students.

11. As a major responsibility, student appraisal reports need to be recorded and analyzed and the students’ grievances should be redressed sooner.

Assessment of the activities of the IQAC is mandatory once in two years. Both the teaching and non-teaching staff need to be conscious of Re-accreditation and every committee’s action should be recorded.

Detail plans of the institution for the next year :

To enhance and integrate various activities of the institution and institutionalize many good practices, the IQAC meeting under the chairmanship of the Head of the institution with heads of academic and administrative units and few teachers and a few distinguished educationists, was held on 24 June 2009 at the college premises and the following decisions were taken:

(1) IBFA – Semester Pattern:

Rev.Fr.S.M.G.Sekaran suggested upon teachers framing the syllabus structure for the integrated courses. Prof. G.Balakrishnan said that it would be advisable to start the semester pattern immediately after taking clear decisions on par with the norms of the Bharathidasan University on that matter. In the run, if the system is found to be problematic, the college may revert to the Annual examination system. In general, it was felt that this semester pattern should be implemented as soon as possible.

(2) Teacher Training Course (TTC) in Music and Dance:-

It was suggested by Prof.G.Balakrishnan that the college should explore the possibilities in starting Teacher Training Course in Music and Dance.

(3) 3 month certificate course in English:

Sr.Principal said that in order to improve the spoken English skills of the students, it was planned earlier to conduct a 3 month certificate course in English. But recently, a 25 - day Bridge Course in English is being organized for the month of July. So the certificate course is postponed for the next year.

(4) Cultural exchange:

Sr. Principal informed the members about the arrival of an Odyssey dancer from Polland to Kalai Kaviri to learn Bharathanatyam. This golden opportunity can be utilized for a cultural exchange by the dance staff. Dr. G.Melchias added that an Odyssey dance programme may be conducted inside the campus and publicized with the support of the media. In addition, Ms. Thulasi, a Bharathanatyam Dancer from Holland is being trained in vocal music.

(5) Decline in admission percentage:-

While discussing the decline in the percentage of admission, Prof.G.Balakrishnan informed that he had been a well-wisher of KalaiKaviri for so many years and he had been propagating the mission of the institution in various colleges. However, stalls shall be put up through ‘Dinamalar Vazhikaati’- a career guidance cell for students, to display the diverse courses offered in the college and their job opportunities. Moreover, in this competitive world, the percentage of admission will have a boost only through propaganda. He also advocated exposure visits to the neighbouring villages and emphasized the need for the staff to keep track of admission more consciously than ever before. Subsequently, Sr.Principal decided to prepare a 10 – Minute VCD programme for propagating the mission of Kalai Kaviri.
Dr.G.Melchias suggested that the efficient functioning of the extension services of the college will help in propagating Music and Bharathanatyam. Moreover, the college campus need to be utilized to the maximum level.

(6) 2F and 12B:-

Sr.Principal informed that the institution has not yet been recognized for registration under Rule 2 (f) and 12 (b) by the UGC, because of the lack of qualified staff. Suggestions were given by Dr.G.Melchias to apply for UGC without delay.

(7) Improving the quality of teaching:-

During the meeting, it was suggested that the administration should encourage the staff to attend refresher and orientation courses to improve their teaching methodology. So far, refresher courses have not been conducted anywhere in Tamil Nadu for the subject of dance. Sr. Principal expressed her wish to conduct Refresher Courses in the college. Moreover, communication in English should be made mandatory not only for the welfare of students from other states, but it is also a very essential basic.

(8) Students’discipline:

While discussing the students’ discipline, a member suggested that the teachers ought to be firm as well as friendly in their attitude towards the students. Teaching ambience should be amicable and teachers need to convert themselves into role models for students. Moreover, a rapport ought to be maintained between the staff and students.

Sr.Principal said that inspite of cell-phones being banned inside the college campus, students are using it secretly. Thereupon, she called for the co-operation of the teachers in restricting the use of cell-phones. Moreover, teachers should avoid using them in classrooms. All the other members approved of this decision.

There was a slight disturbance in the meeting when Sr.Principal raised the question about seniors teaching class items of Bharathanatyam to their juniors since it may lower the quality of teaching. The staff representing the department of Bharathanatyam promised that they would take care to rectify that problem very soon. Prof.G.Balakrishnan, one of the member of the IQAC felt that teachers ought to take up the hold in maintaining the discipline of students for better functioning of the institution. Moreover, there should be no compromise in imparting professional training in the field of Fine Arts.

He also suggested that teachers must attend orientation courses or refresher courses conducted by the Bharathidasan university at Kajamalai Campus.

Dr.G.Melchias suggested that every institution has a moral responsibility in redressing the grievances of the students. Subsequently, a suggestion box should be opened once in a month and their grievances aired need to be redressed immediately. Moreover, the committee’s action should be recorded for reaccreditation.
